What Generation Am I? Birth Year Ranges for Every Generation

Every generation has its defining moments — wars, technological breakthroughs, economic shifts, and cultural revolutions that shape how millions of people see the world. But which generation do you belong to? Enter your birth year in our age calculator to find your exact age, then read on to discover your generational identity.

The Greatest Generation (Born 1901–1927)

Also called the G.I. Generation, these are the men and women who grew up during the Great Depression and fought in World War II. They are defined by sacrifice, duty, and resilience. Tom Brokaw popularized the name in his 1998 book. Most members of this generation were born in the 1920s or earlier. Their shared experience of global conflict forged a deep sense of civic responsibility that shaped the postwar world.

The Silent Generation (Born 1928–1945)

Born between the Great Depression and the end of World War II, the Silent Generation earned their name for being conformist and civic-minded. They came of age during the Korean War and the early Cold War. Many became leaders of the Civil Rights Movement — Martin Luther King Jr. was born in 1929. This generation valued hard work, loyalty to institutions, and traditional family structures.

Baby Boomers (Born 1946–1964)

The post-war baby boom produced the largest generation in history at the time. Boomers grew up during unprecedented economic prosperity, the Vietnam War, Woodstock, and the Moon landing. They transformed workplace culture, consumer markets, and politics. If you were born in 1955, you are right in the heart of the Boomer generation. Today, Boomers are redefining retirement — many continue working well into their 60s and 70s.

Generation X (Born 1965–1980)

Often called the "forgotten generation," Gen X grew up as latchkey kids during a time of rising divorce rates and both parents working. They witnessed the fall of the Berlin Wall, the rise of MTV, and the dawn of personal computing. Gen X is known for independence, skepticism toward institutions, and entrepreneurial spirit. Someone born in 1975 is a quintessential Gen Xer — old enough to remember life before the internet, young enough to have adopted it early.

Millennials / Generation Y (Born 1981–1996)

Millennials came of age around the turn of the millennium. They are the first generation to grow up with the internet, smartphones, and social media as everyday realities. Major formative events include 9/11, the 2008 financial crisis, and the rise of the gig economy. Millennials are often stereotyped as entitled, but research shows they are the most educated generation in history. Check how old a 1990 baby is today.

Generation Z (Born 1997–2012)

Gen Z are true digital natives — they have never known a world without smartphones. They are characterized by pragmatism, social awareness, and comfort with diversity. Growing up during the COVID-19 pandemic profoundly affected their education and social development. Gen Z communicates through short-form video, values authenticity, and is deeply concerned about climate change. A child of 2000 is among the older Gen Z members.

Generation Alpha (Born 2013–2025)

The children of Millennials, Generation Alpha is the first generation born entirely in the 21st century. Named by social researcher Mark McCrindle, they are growing up with AI assistants, tablets before they can read, and a world shaped by climate awareness. It is too early to define their generational character, but early research suggests they will be the most technologically immersed and globally connected generation ever. Kids born in 2020 are among the youngest Alphas.

Cusper Generations: Between Two Worlds

Not everyone fits neatly into one generation. "Cuspers" are people born on the boundary between two generations, sharing traits of both. Xennials (born roughly 1977–1983) bridge Gen X and Millennials — they had analog childhoods but digital adulthoods. Zillennials (born 1993–1998) straddle Millennials and Gen Z, remembering early social media but adapting quickly to TikTok culture. Zalphas (born 2010–2014) sit between Gen Z and Alpha.

Why Do Exact Cutoff Years Vary?

There is no universal authority that defines generation boundaries. The Pew Research Center, Strauss-Howe generational theory, and McCrindle Research all use slightly different ranges. The boundaries above represent the most commonly cited ranges. What matters most is shared cultural experience, not the exact year. Two people born a year apart on either side of a boundary often have more in common with each other than with people born at the opposite end of their "official" generation.
