Gemini's two brightest stars, Castor and Pollux, represent the mythological twin brothers. Pollux is a red giant about 34 light-years from Earth and is notable for hosting one of the first confirmed exoplanets orbiting a giant star. NASA's Gemini program (1961–1966) was named after this constellation because each mission carried two astronauts.

The zodiac system was created by Babylonian astronomers around 500 BCE as a coordinate system for tracking the Sun, Moon, and planets along the ecliptic.
