Scorpius is one of the most distinctive zodiac constellations, easily recognizable by its curved tail of stars. Its brightest star, Antares, is a red supergiant so large that if placed at the center of our solar system, it would extend past the orbit of Mars. The name Antares means "rival of Mars" in Greek, because its reddish color resembles the planet. Astronomically, the Sun spends only about seven days in Scorpius — shorter than any other zodiac constellation.
The zodiac system was created by Babylonian astronomers around 500 BCE as a coordinate system for tracking the Sun, Moon, and planets along the ecliptic. The twelve signs divide the ecliptic into 30-degree segments.
